1976 The experimental gas turbine APT-E stands outside the Railway Technical Centre at Derby in April 1976. This is my first railway photograph!
1978 A line up at Toton depot on 24th June 1978 with members of class 44 in predominance.
1980 55004 and 50047 at York on 27th May 1980. The class 50 was waiting to work a service to the South West following overhaul at Doncaster Works.
76040 & 76009 lead two rows of class mates at Reddish depot, Manchester on 20th October 1980. The Woodhead route over the Pennines closed the following year rendering the class redundant.
1981 47510 Fair Rosamund arrives at Chester on 2nd July 1981.
40166 passes through Preston on 9th July 1981.
40171 tows 313038 through Manchester Victoria on 25th August 1981.
The Class 313 was returning to London from the now closed Horwich Works where it had been for overhaul. The Class 40 is now also a memory, as is the old Man Vic seen here.
55009 Alycidon pauses at Manchester Victoria with the 09:45 Edinburgh - Liverpool Lime Street on Sunday 27th December 1981. This was to have been the last day of Deltic working on the Trans Pennine route, however 55002 made an unexpected return trip the following Wednesday before the class was withdrawn on 2nd January 1982.
1982 Class 503 M29140M stands at Liverpool Lime Street underground on 27th February 1982.
Class 506 with M59402M leading departs from Guide Bridge with a Manchester Piccadilly - Hadfield service on 3rd August 1982. The 1500V DC class was withdrawn en-bloc in December 1984 when the line was re-energised at 25kV AC. The track is now lifted through these near two platforms at Guide Bridge.
25248 shunts at Deepdale on the now closed branch in Preston on 27th August 1982.
The pair of prototype Class 210 DEMUs leave Preston on 13th September 1982 returning to Derby following their appearance at an open day at Carlisle Upperby.
1983 33049 enters Crewe with a service from Cardiff on 6th January 1983.
Class 110 Calder Valley DMU with 51840 at the front stands at Clayton West on the last day of services on the branch off the Huddersfield - Sheffield line on 22nd January 1983.
Class 123 52095 stands at Lancaster with a Leeds service on 9th April 1983. This class was originally introduced on the Western Region, but was transferred to the Eastern in the late 70s where they found regular use on services such as this in conjunction with the class 124 Trans Pennine units. They were withdrawn in 1984.
50017 pulls out of Newton Abbot on 2nd July 1983.
A Class 501 unit awaits departure from London's Broad Street terminus with a Richmond service on 9th July 1983. The class was withdrawn in 1985 when they were replaced by class 313 units and Broad Street itself  closed in 1986 to make way for office development. North London Line services now run from the adjacent Liverpool Street station.
40096 emerges from Deepdale tunnel on the now close Deepdale branch in Preston with coal empties bound for Warrington on 12th September 1983.
Class 120 Swindon Cross Country DMU departs from Bolton on 31st December 1983 with 09:50 Blackpool North - Manchester Victoria.
Class 104 BRCW DMU enters Bolton on 31st December 1983 with 12:33 Blackburn - Manchester Victoria.
1984 In its original West Yorkshire PTE livery,  141005 stands at Wakefield Kirkgate on 19th June 1984.
The only named Class 46, 46026 Leicestershire And Derbyshire Yeomanry passes through Preston with 08:00 York - Blackpool North on 30th June 1984.
20217 and 20030 await departure from Skegness on 8th July 1984.
53051 leasd the 11:10 departure to Stratford out of the now abandoned Birmingham Moor Street satation on 11th August 1984.
During the first year of operation, and before creation of a dedicated fleet of locomotives, 73109 stands at Victoria with a Gatwick Express service on 29th August 1984.
370007 pauses at Preston on 29th August 1984 heading from Euston to Glasgow. During the summer of 1984 the APT was used on a relatively low-key Monday/Wednesday/Friday Glasgow - Euston & return relief working in passenger service.
50020 awaits departure from Exeter St Davids working the 15:08 Paddington - Plymouth on 7th September 1984.
40152 & 40086 pass Greenholme with The Royal Scot railtour on 28th December 1984.
1985 25307 approaches Weeton box with 16:30 Blackpool North - Euston on 29th June 1985.
1986 Hastings diesel units 1001/1011 & 1032 head south through the Lune Valley working the Long Thin Drag railtour on 12th April 1986.
45111 Grenadier Guardsman passes Batley with the 09:03 Liverpool - Scarborough on 11th June 1986.
20105 & 20180 head downhill from Westhoughton towards Lostock Junction at Chew Moor on 29th June 1986 with the diverted 08:200 Birmingham - Blackpool North. 47441 is attached at the rear to take the train forwards to Preston from Lostock Junction, where the Class 20s were detatched.
81017 passes Galgate, south of Lancaster on 3rd July 1986 with 07:30 Penzance Aberdeen. In the background behind the loco the distinctive tower at Forton motorway services can be seen. 
31187 & 31322 are seen at Preston Dock on a rare Saturday additional oil train from Lindsay Refinery on 5th July 1986. Trains ceased running to the docks some years ago, while the background scene is now totally developed and the Manxman (a nightclub at the time!) has also moved on.
Cravens car 53812 leads the 10:30 Oxenholme - Windermere past Burneside on 5th August 1986. 
During the final months of testing before withdrawal of the last cars, an APT set heads south through the Lune Valley on 5th August 1986.
25906 & 25903 head a northbound ballast working through the Lune Valley on 5th August 1986.
45114 crosses Saddleworth Viaduct with the 12:53 Scarborough - Bangor on 9th August 1986. 
33202 & 33207 pass Srings Branch depot, Wigan with the Eden Serpent railtour bound for the Settle & Carlisle on 8th November 1986.
45058 pauses during train shunting operations at Peak Forest on 29th November 1986. This particular loco was withdrawn in September 1987, with the last of the class surviving until 1989.
47431 passes Chinley on 29th November 1986 with 11:22 Sheffield - Liverpool Lime St.
1987 45110 passes Diggle with the 08:20 Newcastle - Llandudno on 3rd January 1987.
45129 passes Diggle working the 08:20 Newcastle - Llandudno on 24th January 1987.
25313 stands at the buffers at Manchester Piccadilly on 17th March 1987 with the 19:34 vans from Bolton. The Class 25 was withdrawn the following day, and the last member of the class was taken out of service by the end of that week. Piccadilly now no longer sees any mail trains with the opening of the Railnet hub at Warrington in 1998.
142001 in its original Greater Manchester PTE livery pulls away from Miles Platting on 17th April 1987. The semaphore signals are now long gone, and the station has since been closed and totally demolished.
On the return leg of its first test run to Carlisle, 89001 passes Winwick Junction near Warrington on 1st May 1987
33055 climbs the bank at Upton Scudamore, south of Westbury on 30th June 1987 working the 16:20 Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour. 
During 1987, the 4-REP units were taken out of service to provide their traction equipment for the Class 442 Wessex Electrics. During this period, Class 73s were used on express services with the non-powered 4-TC stock. Here 73124 is seen passing Worting Junction, Basingstoke on 4th July 1987.
33051 passes Worting Junction, Basingstoke with the Venice Simplon Orient Express on 4th July 1987.
37403 heads away from Crianlarich with 12:20 Glasgow Queen St - Oban on 21st August 1987
37424 passes the rock face near Lochailort at the head of the 16:10 Fort William - Mallaig on 24th August 1987.
1988 D200 passes Bangor on 2nd April 1988 with the Tubular Belle railtour.
31410 & 31429 pass Kirkstall Junction, Leeds with the 16:05 Leeds - Carlisle on 4th April 1988. The semaphores are now gone from this location which is now electrified. All Leeds - Carlisle trains are now Sprinters and the two Class 31s were withdrawn in 1998 & 1991 respectively. 31410 spent its last years in Regional Railways livery working in the North West.
31200 & 31324 pull out of Morecambe with the Pathfinder Tours Morecambe Bay Marauder on 9th April 1988.
45052 passes through Kirkham on 14th May 1988 with the Peak n Sea railtour heading for Blackpool from Buxton. To the left in the background is the Foxes biscuit factory, which has since been rebuilt.
31223 crosses Entwistle Viaduct with 18:05 Blackburn - Manchester Victoria on 16th August 1988.
47413 passes Upper Denton on 17th September 1988 with the 08:23 Newcastle - Carlisle which reverted to loco haulage during the summer of 1988.
1989 47503 stands at Liverpool Lime St on 9th April 1989 with the 15:52 departure for Newcastle.
20120 & 20090 pass Kettlesbeck Bridge between Carnforth and Hellifield with a train of steel coils diverted from the West Coast Main Line on 11th April 1989.
31462 passes Salford with 17:00 Manchester Victoria - Blackburn on 5th May 1989.
The sole Class 47 painted in Trans Pennine livery 47475 climbs away from Manchester Victoria with the 08:52 Liverpool Lime St - Newcastle on 14th May 1989.
47421 passes Batley with the 08:25 Newcastle - Liverpool Lime St on 15th July 1989.
Class 504 with 77180 leading passes Queens Road box on 19th August 1989 with the 14:15 Bury - Manchester Victoria. The Bury line is now part of the Metrolink network, on which the new tram service started in April 1992.
303049 leaves Hadfield with the 15:19 for Manchester Piccadilly on 19th August 1989
81012 descends from Shap with the 11:35 Glasgow - Euston relief on 28th December 1989.
1990 47446 passes Kirkham North Junction with Blackpool Tower visible in the distance with the 13:00 Blackpool North - Euston on 3rd February 1990.
303060 and 304045 stand at Manchester Piccadilly on 12th February 1990.
47444 passes Diggle with the 08:52 Liverpool Lime Street - Newcastle on 18th March 1990.
56095 passes Monks Sidings, Warrington with a loaded MGR from Yorkshire bound for Fiddlers Ferry on 24th December 1990.
Following the withdrawal of the class 25, D7672 Tamworth Castle was put back into operation by Holbeck depot, Leeds and is seen here passig Holme Chapel on the climb to Copy Pit with the Copy Pit Pullman railtour on 29th December 1990.
1991 47541 The Queen Mother passes Engine Shed Junction at Holbeck in Leeds with the diverted 10:43 Newcastle - Liverpool on 6th January 1991.
20090 & 20120 are at the head of an MGR being loaded at Bickershaw Colliery near Wigan on 16th March 1991 twelve months before closure of the colliery.
307111 rounds the curve at Wortley South Junction, Leeds forming the 15:51 Leeds - Doncaster on 29th March 1991.
50031 passes Talaton, between Honiton and Exeter with the 13:15 Waterloo - Exeter on 3rd May 1991.
50030 passes Tisbury Gates heading the 08:10 Exeter - Waterloo on 8th August 1991.
50033 rounds the curve at Milborne Port on the evening of 8th August 1991 with the 16:15 Waterloo - Yeovil Junction.
47401 spent its last days in green livery numbered as D1500 and was a regular performer on the 15:00 Lindsay - West Burton tanks as seen here at Melton Ross on 10th September 1991.
50033 passes New Covent Garden Market shortly after departure from Waterloo with the 13:15 to Exeter on 13th September 1991.
1993 26003 & 26005 head away from Todmorden with the Cumbrian Tynesider railtour on 13th March 1993. The class was withdrawn later that year in October.
47513 passes Frosterley on the Eastgate branch on 10th April 1993 with the returning Weardale Explorer railtour.
37414 approaches Atherton with the 17:25 Manchester Victoria - Southport Club Train on 23rd July 1993.
31408 is caught at Prescot with a Liverpool Lime Street - Blackpool North service on 30th August 1993.
While still running as a 4 car unit, 305511 heads away from Manchester Airport on 31st August 1993. At this time the branch to the airport had only the northbound link.
1996 One of two 47/8s repainted for a short time into Porterbrook colours, 47817 passes Deane Clough to the north of Bolton at the head of the 12:30 Glasgow Central - Poole on 3rd August 1996.
1997 Originally purchased by National Power, the Class 59/2 locomotives are now operated by EWS and carry their livery. In its original colours 59203 passes Burton Salmon on 15th February 1997.
